My fee for a full-day school visit is $800 for schools near my home on Long Island (I'll ask your school to arrange
transportation for me, I don't drive), $950 for distances great enough to require an overnight stay. (That latter fee
includes my travel and lodging.) If there's time while I'm in your area to do an extra presentation at your public library
or meet with a class in children's literature, I'd be glad to do that without fee. Fees for speaking at conferences are
negotiable.
I'm happy to travel anywhere, although I ask a minimum of three school days (these can be used by three schools in the same general area) if distances require significant travel time. Otherwise there's too much time on airplanes compared to the time I'm doing something useful with kids, and I won't have a margin above my local fee large enough to help balance today's travel costs.
If you are considering having me visit your school or make a presentation for your organization, please contact me by e-mail
(click here, or send a message to alicemclerran@mac.com) -- or call
me at (631) 776-2779. I can send information on my normal approach to school visits - a non-standard one, involving as many
sessions as you can squeeze into your school day, with no breaks except for lunch. That approach lets me have smaller
groups and work interactively, using the questions students ask to guide our dialogue.
But I've recently learned to use PowerPoint, which lets me 'show' AND 'tell'. You might prefer having a few more structured presentations with larger groups. Or we could mix approaches, some of each. I'm happy to tailor the day to fit the needs of your school. Doing the same thing over and over would be no fun at all, and writers like to have fun during author visits just as much as students do! |
